Have you ever thought about harnessing up 16 sled dogs, putting them in front of a sled loaded with dog food, survival gear, and a few protein bars for you, and heading out for a week or two into arctic weather, 1128 miles of rugged trail conditions, and wildlife that might want to hurt you?
Yeah, me neither! Yet that’s just what thirty-three otherwise rational humans are doing right now.
There were forty mushers – 7 mushers withdrew from the Iditarod before it even started. Came to their senses, you might say? Many others would join that chorus – for the thirty-three mushers, this is what they’ve waited and trained for their entire lives. The challenge of what’s called the Last Great Race on Earth is one they feel they’re up for, and the “prove it” is happening now on the windswept wilderness between Fairbanks and Nome, Alaska. Some teams will be on the trail for eight or 9 days, most far longer, and some teams will scratch along the way, ending their shot at completing the Iditarod, something only 842 humans have accomplished since this race began in 1973.
What is your Iditarod? For these mushers, what they’re doing stretches their skills and talents, and it’s their innate talents that will serve them in this race. What do you enjoy doing that taps into your innate talents, and how can you stretch yourself through goal-setting?
I’m a former radio personality who spent most of her years on the radio in major markets. When I got started in Columbus, GA I dreamed of working on-air in some of America’s top cities, and did – Boston, Washington DC, and Atlanta. Fast-forward a few years to when I started the Tiny Bites podcast. My goal was a long-running, short, focused podcast that people would listen to each day and get actionable life skills they could use right away. That was over 3.5 years ago – haven’t missed a day yet and I love writing and producing this podcast because it lets me use skills developed over years of being on the air. Plus, the challenge of putting out a new podcast every single day is both scary and exciting.
What is your Iditarod? What do you dream of achieving, and how can you stretch that goal as far as you can go? Here are three episodes of the Tiny Bites of Wagaliciousness podcast to jump-start ideas:

Today, think about what your Iditarod could be, and sketch out a timeline that can realistically get you there. Fill in a few details – don’t go crazy and think you have to nail down every single detail needed for you to achieve your goal, just some of the milestones you’ll need to hit on your way to it. If you can plug them into the timeline, even better. If not, that’s OK, too. Calendar a 15-minute block of time each week that you will use to plan the steps needed to achieve your goal, and then put them into the timeline.
This is how all big achievements begin – dreaming and planning and working it into existence. If you’re ready to get started achieving your own personal Iditarod, using your own innate talents and skills, then it’s time to get to work.
Along the way, vividly imagine yourself achieving your goal and celebrating your victory!

Sandy Weaver
