Want to Create Delicious Anticipation?

Have you ever heard the phrase “delicious anticipation?” This is one of those times when two words make magic when they get together, because they so perfectly describe something wonderful.

Delicious anticipation – what is it, why do you want it, and how do you get it?

Delicious anticipation was the excitement you had imagining what was in those holiday gifts with ribbons and bright paper and your name on them. Delicious anticipation is the butterflies you feel as you dress for a date with someone you love. Delicious anticipation is the fun you have planning a big vacation. Delicious anticipation is seeing your ideal home in your imagination and knowing that it will be yours one day. Delicious anticipation is you tuning in to your dreams and enjoying the movie of them as it plays inside your head.

Delicious anticipation is when your imagination meets your unfolding life. It’s second nature to some people, and for others it needs to be cultivated and practiced. There’s no right or wrong way to create delicious anticipation, and it is worth noticing it when you’re feeling it so you can do doing more of whatever you were doing or thinking when it snuck up on you. Delicious anticipation relieves stress, keeps you focused on a goal, and distracts you from the not-optimal pieces of your life. Delicious anticipation is accompanied by your body’s feel-good hormones circulating inside you.

Can you think of a time where you had fun with delicious anticipation? Here’s a story from my life: about 10 years ago I saw a red car that blew me away. It was going south on I-85 and I was going north, and I watched it as long as I safely could. Beautiful. Stylish. Gorgeous shade of red. My new dream car. Each time I saw one after that, I felt the same awe and excitement and knew one day that would be my car. I loved thinking about how it would look parked in my garage, how I’d feel driving it, and how it would put a smile on my face every day. That’s delicious anticipation. One day the dream came true, and that car does put a smile on my face every day. One of my favorite memories is of seeing it the very first time. That’s not exactly delicious anticipation, and yet it still feels wonderful.

Do you have a story like that, too? Just remembering the story can bring back the feelings, so it’s worth taking a few minutes today to find your favorite one. Going forward, remember to notice the times you’re excited about something you’re planning, so you can milk those feelings on the way to doing the thing.
