Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites - The Insidiousness of Imposter Syndrome

I won an award recently. I’m not telling you this to brag.

It was a very big one, the most prestigious that the organization grants, and it was a surprise. As I listened to the presenter, it slowly dawned on me that he was talking about me – that I was the person winning the big award.

First came shock, then pleasure, then imposter syndrome reared its ugly head in that subtle way it has of bursting balloons. Thoughts of “but I didn’t do anything special” and “anyone in my position would have done the same thing” and “maybe no one else was nominated.”

Seriously? Yes, seriously – imposter syndrome can and does undermine some of the best moments of our lives if we let it.

In that moment, before I took the stage to accept the award, I reminded myself that others had been in my position and didn’t do what I did. That what I did was special. That, whether anyone else was nominated or not, the services I had provided to that organization warranted the recognition.

I want you to do the same thing for yourself when imposter syndrome sneaks up on you, too – remind yourself that you are talented, intelligent and amazing!
