Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites - Learning to Quit Beating Yourself Up
Are you sometimes guilty of beating yourself up?
Oh, the painful power of perfectionism…it infects most people from time to time, and some people most of the time. It’s that feeling that you must be an expert at what you’re doing, whether you’ve ever done it before or not!
I remember not wanting to play sports in school because I thought I was clumsy, and I was certain I’d be terrible and would be ridiculed. That was a recurring theme in my life with many things, not just sports – maybe you’ve felt that way, too?
Beating yourself up is a tough habit to break, and it’s easier if you can catch yourself and change the hurtful words to something true and much more loving. Try this: “I am currently under construction…thank you for your patience.” Say those words to yourself instead of beating yourself up, and if there’s someone in your life who likes to correct you or even belittle you, maybe say those words out loud to them, too.
