Many, and maybe most, people do. It’s hard to let go of something that hurts your heart or your pride. It can take a very long time to let go of those wounds, and it doesn’t have to.
Just like you leave a scab alone to let your skin heal from a cut, you can leave the memory alone when it pops back into your head, demanding attention. Think of it as the scab – a reminder of the painful thing that happened and an indication that healing is happening.
Just as you try not to pick at the scab on your skin, try not to pick at the scab in your mind. When the memory pops up inside your head, cover it with a mental bandage and focus on something else. Distract yourself and let your emotions heal in peace.
